25 Best Travel Apps Every Solo Traveler Needs in 2027
By Sara Ann Straw · November 7, 2026 · 5 min read

Paper maps, phrasebooks, printed itineraries, bulky guidebooks. All of it, gone. Today your phone can navigate a foreign city, translate a menu, hail a ride, track your budget, and even find the nearest public restroom, all before you finish your coffee.
Whether this is your first solo trip or your fiftieth, the right apps save time, cut down stress, and help you travel with more confidence. Here’s what I actually recommend downloading before you go.

Navigation & Maps
1. Google Maps ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best for: Navigation
If I could only keep one travel app, this would be it. Walking directions, public transit, restaurant reviews, saved locations, offline maps, live traffic. It does almost everything.
Pro tip: Download offline maps before you leave home, in case you lose service.
2. Roadtrippers ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ Best for: Road trips
Turns an ordinary drive into an adventure by surfacing scenic routes, roadside attractions, national parks, hidden gems, restaurants, and hotels along your way. A must for any U.S. or Canadian road trip.
3. Maps.me Best for: Offline navigation
Ideal when you’re traveling internationally or hiking somewhere with limited cell service.
Weather & Flights
4. Drive Weather ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of the most underrated apps out there. Instead of forecasting conditions at one location, it forecasts conditions along your entire route: snow, heavy rain, ice, high winds, and thunderstorms. Perfect for national parks, road trips, and winter travel.
5. Weather Underground
One of the most accurate weather apps available. Great for planning hikes, beach days, outdoor excursions, and flights.
6. Flighty (iPhone)
My favorite flight app, hands down. It often flags delays before the airline does, plus gate changes, aircraft locations, and flight history.
7. Skyscanner
Great for finding cheap flights, staying flexible, and exploring destinations on a budget. The “Everywhere” search is one of my favorite features for figuring out where to go next.
Transportation & Planning
8. Rome2Rio ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Answers the one question every trip starts with: how do I get there? Compares flights, trains, buses, ferries, and rideshares in one place. One of the most useful planning tools out there.
9. Uber
Still one of the easiest ways to get around. Depending on where you’re headed, also download the local equivalent: Grab, Bolt, Lyft, or DiDi.
10. Wanderlog ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
I prefer this to most itinerary apps. Trip planning, budget tracking, maps, reservations, and collaboration, all in one, and especially great for multi-city trips.
11. TripIt
Forward your confirmation emails, and TripIt builds your itinerary automatically.
Internet & Money
12. Airalo ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
My favorite eSIM app. Activate your data plan before you land, rather than hunting for a SIM card once you arrive.
13. Holafly
Offers unlimited data plans in many destinations, great if you’ll be working remotely.
14. Wise ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
A must-have for international travel: multi-currency accounts, strong exchange rates, low fees, and easy international transfers.
15. XE Currency
Know exactly what you’re spending before you make a purchase.
Language
16. Google Translate
Camera translation alone makes this worth downloading. Read menus, translate signs, hold conversations, and download languages for offline use.
17. DeepL
One of the most accurate translation apps available, especially for more natural-sounding conversations.
Safety & Wellness
18. Noonlight ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
One of the best personal safety apps around. Hold the safety button while you walk; if something happens and you release it without entering your PIN, emergency services are contacted.
19. Life360
Perfect if family wants to know you’re safe. Share your location during your trip for extra peace of mind.
20. Flush ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
Yes, there’s an app for finding bathrooms, and you’ll appreciate it more than you’d think. It locates public restrooms, accessible bathrooms, and free toilets, along with opening hours, even offline.
Hiking & Outdoor Adventures
21. AllTrails
Great for hiking, national parks, waterfalls, and scenic overlooks. Download your maps before you set out.
Activities
22. GetYourGuide
Book walking tours, museums, skip-the-line tickets, and day trips.
23. Viator
Another favorite for booking tours worldwide. Always compare reviews before you book.
Finding Nearby Essentials
24. AroundMe
Quickly locates pharmacies, ATMs, hospitals, restaurants, and grocery and gas stations. Especially handy right after you arrive somewhere new.
Staying Connected
25. WhatsApp
Nearly every country uses it. Contact hotels, message tour operators, call home, and stay in touch with new friends along the way.

Final Thoughts
The best travel app isn’t the one with the most downloads. It’s the one that solves your problem the moment you need it. With the right mix of navigation, planning, budgeting, safety, and communication apps, you’ll spend less time worrying about logistics and more time enjoying the trip.
Download your favorites before you go, test them at home first, and travel with confidence.
